In my opinion the absolute best treatment for cold sores is Valtrex. Valtrex stops colds sores in their tracks. None of the other treatments come close to the effectiveness of Valtrex, not the ointment Zovirax, and certainly not Abreva or anything else. Ask your doctor about it to see if you would be a good candidate for this medication. My doctor prescribed it for me for cold sores about five years ago and after taking it only a couple of times I hardly ever get a cold sore any more, and before Valtrex I was having several attacks a year. On the rare occasions that I do get one now, it is gone almost immediately when I take the medication - in about a day.

It works differently for everyone. One person could say its highly effective, another could say it isn't. Your best bet is to go to the doctor and get the proper treatment. :)

It's probably the best non intravenous medication you can get for HSV the virus that causes cold sores.

500mg once daily is good for supression, twice daily is good for treatment.

We give it to cancer patients who have weakened immunities from chemo who break out in cold sores...and it's pretty effective even then.

if the out break is really sever then i would say that Valtrex is great at treating cold sores, but it does come with some side effects (nausia, diareah, vomiting). but if the out break is small or not as sever then u can use things like Abreva, Carmex or Lipactin to help heal them and soothe the symptoms.
